AVIF uses AV1 Intra compression — the same codec backbone that streams 4K video — to achieve file sizes roughly 50% smaller than JPEG at equivalent visual quality. That efficiency comes from tools that most imaging pipelines still lack: AV1 decoding support landed in Windows only with Windows 11 22H2 (via the AV1 Video Extension), macOS support arrived in Sequoia, and many embedded systems, older Android devices, and third-party image editors from before 2023 cannot open AVIF files at all. When you need to send a photo to someone whose software predates that support window, upload to a platform that strips AVIF on ingest, or use an image in an email client that renders attachments as JPEG anyway, converting to JPG is the practical move. JPEG's lossy DCT compression has been universally decoded since the mid-1990s and is the accepted format for photographic content across every major operating system, browser, CMS, social network, and print workflow. The conversion does cost you some fidelity — AVIF can encode at up to 12-bit depth and supports both HDR (PQ and HLG transfer functions) and wide-gamut color spaces such as Display P3 and Rec. 2020, none of which survive in a standard JPEG — but for ordinary sharing and compatibility the result is indistinguishable to most viewers.

Why convert AVIF to JPG

The dominant reason is receiver compatibility. AVIF is still absent from older Lightroom exports, Windows Photo Viewer before the AV1 extension, many shared-hosting image processors, and virtually all print labs. A second reason is platform ingest: Facebook, LinkedIn, and several CMS thumbnail pipelines re-encode uploads internally and either reject AVIF or silently produce broken previews. A third case is embedded use — HTML email clients parse MIME types strictly and fall back to a broken-image icon rather than rendering AVIF. JPG eliminates all three friction points without requiring the recipient to install anything.

Limitations

  • Encoding is CPU-expensive — an AVIF export can take 10-30× longer than JPEG.
  • Older software (pre-2022) cannot open AVIF without plugins.
  • Email clients still largely ignore it — stick to JPEG for attachments.

Quality & Compatibility

AVIF's alpha channel (transparency) is discarded entirely; pixels that were transparent are composited against a white background during the conversion because JPG has no alpha plane. HDR luminance data is tone-mapped to the SDR range and clipped — highlight detail encoded above 100 nits in an HDR AVIF is lost permanently. Color space is collapsed to sRGB; any Display P3 or Rec. 2020 wide-gamut values are gamut-mapped, which can shift saturated reds and greens visibly on HDR-capable monitors. Bit depth drops from a possible 10 or 12 bits per channel to 8 bits, introducing a theoretical banding risk in shallow gradients, though at typical output resolutions this is rarely visible. XMP and EXIF metadata blocks embedded in the AVIF container are preserved and written into the JPEG's APP1 segment. ICC profile data is carried forward when an sRGB profile is attached; HDR profiles are substituted with sRGB.

It depends on the codecs involved. If both AVIF and JPG are lossy, the pixels are re-encoded and a small amount of detail is discarded — invisible at default quality settings on photographs. If JPG is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) the output keeps every pixel of the decoded AVIF exactly, but cannot recover detail that AVIF had already compressed away.

Often yes, especially when JPG is lossless. AVIF tuned for efficient web delivery will usually produce smaller files than JPG's default settings. If file size matters, drop the quality in Advanced or pick a more compressed target format instead.
