AVIF is a still-image format derived from the AV1 video codec, stored inside an ISOBMFF container. It achieves file sizes typically 50 % smaller than JPEG at equivalent visual quality, and supports wide color gamut (Rec. 2020), HDR (PQ and HLG transfer functions), 10-bit and 12-bit bit depth, and full alpha transparency. The trouble is that AVIF is not a document format: it carries no concept of page dimensions, printable margins, or physical units. PDF/1.7 and PDF 2.0 do carry all of that, which is why users convert — a designer wants to hand off a single-image proof, a client needs a file they can open in Adobe Reader without installing anything, or a print shop requires a PDF for its workflow. In practice, converting AVIF to PDF embeds the decoded raster inside a PDF XObject. The output is always a single-page document whose canvas matches the pixel dimensions of the source image at the resolution assumed during conversion (typically 72 or 96 DPI unless the source carries explicit DPI metadata, which AVIF can store via the EXIF block inside the ItemPropertiesBox). Why convert AVIF to PDF
The most concrete reason is document portability. AVIF has good browser support (Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16+) but effectively zero support in desktop publishing tools, office suites, and print pipelines. Word cannot insert an AVIF natively. Most email clients strip or block it. PDF is universally renderable across every OS, is the expected format for contracts, portfolios, and print proofs, and can be embedded in larger documents. A secondary reason is archival: AVIF files relying on the AV1 decoder depend on toolchains staying current, whereas PDF wrapping a losslessly-decoded raster is far more self-contained for long-term storage.

Quality & Compatibility
What the conversion preserves depends entirely on how the rasterization step is handled. Color accuracy: if the AVIF source uses a Rec. 2020 or Display P3 color space and the conversion pipeline does not embed an ICC profile into the PDF, colors shift on any viewer that assumes sRGB — this is the most common silent quality problem. Bit depth: PDF can carry 8-bit, 16-bit, or 32-bit per-channel image data, but most conversion tools downsample 10-bit or 12-bit AVIF to 8-bit during decoding, losing the high dynamic range headroom. Alpha transparency is lost unless the tool specifically composites the alpha channel against a white or chosen background before embedding, since standard PDF image XObjects do not support alpha in the same manner AVIF does natively. EXIF metadata (camera model, GPS, orientation) travels intact only if the converter explicitly reads the AVIF EXIF block and writes it into the PDF Info or XMP stream. What is fully preserved regardless: the pixel grid itself at whatever bit depth the tool outputs, and the aspect ratio.
Tips for Best Results
- If your AVIF was shot or exported in wide color gamut (Display P3 or Rec. 2020), verify that the resulting PDF embeds an ICC profile — open it in Adobe Acrobat, go to File > Properties > Color Settings, and confirm a profile is listed. Without it, the PDF will look desaturated on most monitors.
- AVIF files with a transparent background convert to a white-background PDF by default because PDF image streams do not carry free-floating alpha. If you need the transparency preserved as a vector mask or knockout, you must composite the image in a tool like Photoshop or Affinity Photo first, then export to PDF from there.
- The apparent resolution (DPI) of the embedded image is determined at conversion time, not stored in the AVIF itself (unless EXIF is present). A 2000 x 2000 px image embedded at 72 DPI produces a PDF page roughly 27.8 inches wide — far too large to print at 1:1. Specify your target DPI (typically 300 for print) in the converter settings or resize the image before uploading.
