Quality & Compatibility
AVIF to PNG is a lossless-output conversion, but the path depends on what the source AVIF contains. If the AVIF was encoded losslessly and at 8-bit depth in sRGB, the decode-to-PNG round-trip is mathematically lossless: every pixel value is preserved. If the source is a 10-bit or 12-bit HDR AVIF in BT.2020 or PQ, the conversion must tone-map or truncate to 8-bit sRGB, which loses highlight and shadow detail the AVIF was holding. Alpha transparency (AVIF supports it natively via an alpha auxiliary image) is decoded and written into PNG's RGBA channel intact. EXIF and XMP metadata embedded in the AVIF container are typically preserved in the output PNG's metadata chunks, though HEIF-specific rotation flags may or may not survive depending on the decoder. ICC profiles embedded in the AVIF are carried over to the PNG iCCP chunk when the decoder honors them.
Tips for Best Results
- If your AVIF source is HDR (shot on a modern iPhone in HEIF/AVIF or exported from Lightroom with a wide-gamut profile), inspect the output PNG at 100% zoom after conversion to confirm highlight detail has not been clipped — tone mapping behavior varies between decoders.
- PNG uses DEFLATE lossless compression, so a converted PNG will be several times larger than the AVIF. If the resulting PNG is destined for the web and you need browser compatibility without the size penalty, convert to WebP instead, which has near-universal browser support and maintains lossless quality.
- If you need to preserve the alpha channel from an AVIF for compositing in a design tool, confirm the output is RGBA PNG (not flattened to white) by checking the file's color mode in your editor before using it in a project.
