The format stores images in the AV1 Image File Format container with HEVC or AV1 intra-frame compression, supporting up to 12-bit depth per channel and wide-gamut color spaces like BT.2020, PQ, and HLG. When you drop an AVIF into an older tool — an image editing suite from 2021, a canvas API in Firefox before v93, a content management system that processes uploads through GD or ImageMagick builds compiled without libaom — you get nothing. PNG, by contrast, is the universal raster interchange format: every browser since IE 6, every OS image viewer, every design tool handles it without a plugin or compile flag. The practical triggers for this conversion are narrow but real: a client's CMS strips or rejects AVIF uploads, a macOS or Windows thumbnail pipeline (pre-2022 builds) shows a blank icon, an older Android WebView inside a hybrid app fails to decode the container, or a print workflow expects a lossless raster with an embedded ICC profile that downstream software can read without AV1 decode support. Quality & Compatibility

AVIF to PNG is a lossless-output conversion, but the path depends on what the source AVIF contains. If the AVIF was encoded losslessly and at 8-bit depth in sRGB, the decode-to-PNG round-trip is mathematically lossless: every pixel value is preserved. If the source is a 10-bit or 12-bit HDR AVIF in BT.2020 or PQ, the conversion must tone-map or truncate to 8-bit sRGB, which loses highlight and shadow detail the AVIF was holding. Alpha transparency (AVIF supports it natively via an alpha auxiliary image) is decoded and written into PNG's RGBA channel intact. EXIF and XMP metadata embedded in the AVIF container are typically preserved in the output PNG's metadata chunks, though HEIF-specific rotation flags may or may not survive depending on the decoder. ICC profiles embedded in the AVIF are carried over to the PNG iCCP chunk when the decoder honors them.
