HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) stores a single photo at roughly half the file size of an equivalent JPEG while maintaining the same perceptual quality — Apple adopted it as the default capture format on iPhone from iOS 11 onward, and most modern Android flagships followed. The catch is that HEIF's underlying codec, HEVC (H.265), carries patent licensing obligations that major open-source software stacks and older operating systems have largely refused to bundle. The result is straightforward: a .heic file taken on your iPhone will fail to open in Windows Photo Viewer on unpatched Windows 10, will not upload to many legacy web forms, and is rejected by services that validate MIME type strictly against image/jpeg. Converting HEIF to JPG solves that interoperability gap immediately and permanently, at the cost of introducing lossy recompression and discarding the depth map, transparency layer, and HDR metadata that HEIF can optionally carry.

Why convert HEIF to JPG
The dominant real-world driver is compatibility, not quality. A .heic file is opaque to Windows systems without a paid codec pack, to browsers other than Safari on Apple platforms, and to the majority of e-commerce upload portals, government forms, and HR systems that specify JPEG. A secondary driver is workflow: photo editors such as older versions of Lightroom Classic or Photoshop (pre-22.0) cannot ingest HEIF natively, so editors who receive files from iPhone-shooting clients convert to JPG before importing. Quality & Compatibility
HEIF stores pixel data at 10-bit per channel internally when shot in HDR mode on modern iPhones; standard HEIF captures are 8-bit. JPG is always 8-bit per channel with YCbCr 4:2:0 chroma subsampling by default, which discards color resolution in the chroma channels. On an 8-bit source the luminance penalty is small at a quality factor of 85 or higher, but the chroma subsampling is a hard loss regardless. HEIF supports an alpha (transparency) channel; JPG has no alpha channel, so any transparent or depth-map layer is silently dropped. HEIF embeds EXIF, GPS, and often MakerNote blocks; most conversion pipelines carry EXIF through to the JPG container intact, but proprietary MakerNote fields from Apple's camera pipeline may be stripped or corrupted depending on the tool. The conversion itself is a lossy-to-lossy step: the pixel data is decoded from HEVC, held in memory uncompressed, then re-encoded to JPEG DCT blocks, so there is a generation loss even if the source was already 8-bit.
Tips for Best Results
- Set JPEG quality to 90 or above when the source HEIF came from a modern iPhone camera — lower quality settings amplify DCT ringing artifacts on edges that HEVC had preserved cleanly, making the degradation visible on zoomed-in images.
- Check whether your HEIF file contains a depth map (Live Photo or Portrait mode shots on iOS) before converting; the depth data is silently discarded in JPG, and if you need it for computational photography tasks you should retain the original .heic alongside the JPG.
- If you are converting a batch of HEIF files shot in Apple's HDR mode (10-bit source), verify the converter tone-maps the HDR range before encoding rather than clipping highlights — clipped whites in a JPG are unrecoverable, whereas the HEIF source retains the full luminance range.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the codecs involved. If both HEIF and JPG are lossy, the pixels are re-encoded and a small amount of detail is discarded — invisible at default quality settings on photographs. If JPG is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) the output keeps every pixel of the decoded HEIF exactly, but cannot recover detail that HEIF had already compressed away.
