Setup: MTS is the AVCHD camcorder variant of the MPEG transport stream. Goal: an interchangeable JPG. Converting MTS to JPG means extracting a still frame (or a series of them) from your video and saving each one as a JPG image. KaijuConverter runs FFmpeg server-side so the frame grab is pixel-accurate: no compression, no post-processing, just the raw video frame rewritten in the JPG encoding you picked. Technical note: MTS is the AVCHD camcorder variant of the MPEG transport stream. Compare that with JPG is the web's default lossy photograph codec, with compression tuned for natural images.

mts

AVCHD Video

Source format

MTS (AVCHD) is a high-definition video format from Sony and Panasonic camcorders.

jpg

JPEG Image

Target format

JPEG is the most widely used lossy image format on the web. It achieves small file sizes through adjustable compression, making it ideal for photographs and complex images where some quality loss is acceptable.

MTS vs JPG — What's the difference?

Why convert MTS to JPG

A single image travels places a whole video cannot — article headers, slide decks, chat messages, anywhere you need illustration but not motion. Converting the right frame to JPG upfront is simpler than linking the whole MTS.

HOW TO CONVERT
MTS → JPG

1

Upload the MTS

Drag-and-drop the video. We accept MTS files up to 25 MB on the free tier.

2

Pick a frame

Seek to a timestamp (default: midpoint) or request every frame as a numbered batch.

3

Receive the JPG

FFmpeg decodes the frame and writes it as a JPG. Download arrives in seconds.

Common Use Cases

Share across platforms

Send JPG files to anyone without worrying about whether they have the right software for MTS.

Embed in documents

Drop JPG output into Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, Notion or a website without conversion warnings.

Optimize size

JPG often produces smaller files than MTS for web, email and storage.

Archive & future-proof

Store in a widely-supported format that will still open on future operating systems without legacy plugins.

MTS vs JPG — Strengths and limitations

What each format does best, and where it falls short.

MTS Strengths

  • Native format for every AVCHD camcorder since 2006.
  • H.264 compression — small files for high-def quality.
  • Direct compatibility with iMovie, Premiere, Resolve, Final Cut.
  • Carries Dolby Digital 5.1 audio on flagship camcorders.

Limitations

  • Slow to decode — editors typically transcode for editing.
  • Proprietary folder-structure conventions complicate direct import.
  • Largely legacy as smartphones replaced dedicated camcorders.

JPG Strengths

  • Excellent compression ratio for photographs (10:1 or better without visible quality loss).
  • Universal support — every camera, phone, OS, and browser reads JPEG natively.
  • Adjustable quality setting balances file size against visual fidelity.
  • Embeds EXIF metadata (camera model, GPS, exposure) automatically.
  • Progressive rendering for graceful loading over slow networks.

Limitations

  • Lossy — every save degrades the image further (generation loss).
  • No transparency channel (use PNG or WebP for that).
  • Visible compression artifacts on text, sharp edges, and flat colors.

Quality & Compatibility

The JPG you receive is the exact frame decoded from the MTS — same resolution, same colour, same content. If the target JPG format is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) there is zero additional loss; if it is lossy (JPG, WebP lossy) the quality setting in Advanced options controls the trade-off.

Tips for Best Results

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The free tier accepts files up to 25 MB without registration, email capture or watermarks; paid plans go up to 2 GB. Paid plans raise the size cap, enable batch conversions and provide a REST API for automation, but nothing on the free tier is quality-limited — the output is exactly the same as on any paid plan.

Yes. The Advanced panel accepts a timestamp in HH:MM:SS.mmm and FFmpeg seeks to that exact presentation time. You can also request the first, middle or last frame shortcuts, or a full batch (one JPG per second or per N frames).

Uploads run over HTTPS, files are processed in isolated containers, and both the source MTS and the JPG output are auto-deleted within two hours. No account is required, file contents are never logged, and KaijuConverter does not use uploads for AI training. The paid plan adds a signable data-processing agreement for regulated workflows.

Yes by default. The extracted frame is written at the same width and height as the source video. If you need a smaller image for the web, an Advanced "scale" option downsizes during the same pass so you do not have to re-encode twice.

Most files finish in well under a minute. Small images and documents are typically ready in a few seconds; large video or audio files scale roughly with duration. Upload speed from your network is usually the dominant factor, not server time.

Partially. We tone-map HDR MTS content back to SDR when the target JPG does not support wide-gamut. For proper HDR preservation pick a modern JPG that supports it natively (JPEG XL or AVIF) and leave "preserve HDR" enabled in Advanced.
