Quality & Compatibility
This conversion is lossy-to-lossy, meaning generation loss is real and unavoidable. The MP2 track is decoded to PCM and then re-encoded as MP3; each encoding step introduces its own psychoacoustic quantization artifacts. At 192 kbps MP3 stereo the result is perceptually transparent for most listeners, but at 128 kbps you may hear subtle pre-echo on transients and mild high-frequency smearing above 16 kHz — artifacts absent in the source MP2 at equivalent bitrate. Sample rate is preserved as-is: 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz MPG audio maps directly to the same rate in MP3 without resampling. There is no alpha channel or color space involved. Container-level metadata — MPEG-2 program stream timecodes, chapter markers, subtitle streams — is discarded entirely; standard ID3 tags (title, artist, album) are not embedded automatically and must be added manually after conversion.
Tips for Best Results
- Match or exceed the source bitrate: if your MPG carries MP2 audio at 192 kbps, set the MP3 output to at least 192 kbps — encoding down to 128 kbps from a 192 kbps source compresses already-compressed data and the quality loss is audible on voice and acoustic instruments.
- Check the audio codec before converting: open the MPG in VLC (Tools > Media Information > Codec) to confirm whether the audio is MP2 or AC-3 — AC-3 tracks from DVD-ripped MPGs decode cleanly, but their original surround channels are downmixed to stereo in the MP3, so dialogue-heavy material is unaffected while surround effects are collapsed.
- If you only need a segment — a specific song in a concert recording, for example — trim the MPG to the desired time range before uploading rather than converting the full file and editing afterward; it saves upload time and avoids re-encoding silence or irrelevant sections.
