MPEG / MPG Format: Complete Guide
MPEG (.mpeg or .mpg) files represent one of the foundational video technologies of the digital era. Developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group — a joint ISO/IEC working group — the MPEG family of standards powered VCDs, DVDs, digital television, and early internet video. Today, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files are legacy formats, but they remain prevalent in archived video, broadcast recordings, DVD rips, and satellite TV capture cards.
The MPEG Family
MPEG is not a single format but a family of standards:
| Standard | Extension | Common Use |
|---|---|---|
| MPEG-1 | .mpg, .mpeg |
VCD (Video CD), early internet video |
| MPEG-2 | .mpg, .mpeg, .m2v, .ts, .vob |
DVD, broadcast TV (DVB), digital satellite |
| MPEG-4 Part 2 | .mp4, .avi |
Early DivX/Xvid era |
| MPEG-4 Part 10 (H.264) | .mp4, .mkv, .mov |
Current web standard |
| MPEG-H (H.265) | .mp4, .mkv, .ts |
4K streaming |
When someone says "an MPEG file", they almost always mean MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video in a .mpg or .mpeg container.
MPEG-1 vs MPEG-2
| Feature | MPEG-1 | MPEG-2 |
|---|---|---|
| Introduced | 1992 | 1995 |
| Max resolution | 352×240 (SIF) | 1920×1080 (1080i) |
| Bit rate | Up to 1.5 Mbps | 1.5 to 80+ Mbps |
| Progressive only | Yes | Interlaced + Progressive |
| Common use | VCD | DVD, broadcast TV |
| Audio | MP1, MP2 | MP2, AC3 (Dolby Digital) |

How to Convert MPEG/MPG to MP4
# MPEG-1 to MP4 (H.264 + AAC)
ffmpeg -i input.mpg -c:v libx264 -preset slow -crf 22 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mp4
# MPEG-2 to MP4 (deinterlace + encode)
ffmpeg -i input.mpg -vf yadif=mode=1 -c:v libx264 -crf 22 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mp4
# MPEG-2 to MP4 without deinterlacing (if progressive source)
ffmpeg -i input.mpg -c:v libx264 -preset slow -crf 22 -c:a aac output.mp4
# Convert to H.265 for smaller files
ffmpeg -i input.mpg -vf yadif=mode=1 -c:v libx265 -crf 28 -c:a aac output.mp4
# Preserve full quality (for further editing)
ffmpeg -i input.mpg -c:v libx264 -crf 15 -c:a aac -b:a 320k output.mp4
Deinterlacing Explained
MPEG-2 broadcast recordings are often interlaced (each frame is two fields captured at different times). Without deinterlacing, the video will show horizontal "combing" artifacts when displayed on modern progressive displays:
# Deinterlace: yadif (Yet Another DeInterlacing Filter)
-vf yadif # simple deinterlace
-vf yadif=mode=1 # output one frame per field (doubles frame rate: 25fps → 50fps)
-vf bwdif # better quality deinterlace (recommended for archiving)
Batch Convert MPEG to MP4
# Linux / macOS
for f in *.mpg *.mpeg; do
ffmpeg -i "$f" -vf yadif=mode=1 -c:v libx264 -crf 22 -c:a aac "${f%.*}.mp4"
done
Convert VCD (MPEG-1) Files
VCD discs contain MPEG-1 video files in a specific directory structure:
# MPEG files are in MPEGAV/ directory on VCD
# Typically named AVSEQ01.DAT, AVSEQ02.DAT etc.
ffmpeg -i AVSEQ01.DAT -c:v libx264 -crf 22 -c:a aac output.mp4
Common MPEG Problems
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| Interlacing artifacts (combing) | Add -vf yadif to FFmpeg command |
| Audio out of sync | Add -async 1 or -af aresample=async=1000 |
| File won't play on modern TV | Convert to MP4 H.264 |
| VCD .DAT files won't open | Rename to .mpg or use -i directly with FFmpeg |
| Large file size | MPEG-1/2 are inefficient — convert to H.264 for 60–80% size reduction |
MPEG-2 in DVDs and Broadcasting
MPEG-2 is the backbone of the DVD standard (with AC3 audio in VOB containers) and digital broadcasting (DVB-T, DVB-S, ATSC). If you have:
- DVD rips (
.vobfiles): use HandBrake for easy conversion - Broadcast recordings (
.tsfiles): see the TS format guide - Satellite captures: often require MPEG-2 decoding; convert with FFmpeg
