WAV, by contrast, is an uncompressed PCM container defined by the RIFF specification. Converting MPG to WAV demuxes the audio track out of the video container, decodes the lossy audio to raw PCM samples, and writes those samples to a WAV file with no further compression stage. The result is a lossless snapshot of what the lossy codec preserved — not a restoration of the original recording. Video data is discarded entirely; the output file contains only audio.

Why convert MPG to WAV

Quality & Compatibility
Because the source codec is lossy MP2 or AC-3, the WAV output is not high-fidelity audio — it is an uncompressed copy of already-degraded material. No generation loss is added by the conversion itself, since the decode-to-PCM step is lossless, but the artifacts introduced at original encode time (pre-echo, smearing in transients, reduced stereo separation at low bitrates) are present and permanent. Bit depth is fixed at 16-bit PCM in standard output; if the source was encoded at a low bitrate such as 128 kbps MP2, the effective dynamic range and high-frequency content will reflect that constraint regardless of bit depth. No alpha channel, color space, or video metadata carries over — WAV stores only PCM audio samples, optional RIFF INFO tags such as title and artist, and a fmt chunk describing sample rate and channel count.
Tips for Best Results
- Verify the audio codec inside the MPG before converting — use MediaInfo or VLC's codec details panel to confirm whether the stream is MP2, AC-3, or PCM; AC-3 at 384 kbps will produce noticeably better WAV output than MP2 at 128 kbps, so the source bitrate sets your quality ceiling.
