M4A — MPEG-4 Audio — is the audio-only companion to the MP4 video container. Apple popularized the extension with the iTunes Store in 2004 when it sold the first songs as AAC-encoded files wrapped in the MP4 container and renamed them .m4a to make it obvious they were audio. Technically an .m4a and a video .mp4 share the same internal structure; only the tracks inside differ.
The format rode Apple’s success through iPods, iPhones, and Apple Music. Every track purchased from the iTunes Store was an M4A with the AAC codec; DRM-protected variants used the .m4p extension and eventually disappeared when the store went DRM-free in 2009. Today M4A is the de-facto audio format for Apple’s ecosystem and an increasingly common alternative to MP3 on the wider web.

They share the same container format, but M4A holds only audio tracks while MP4 holds video (with or without audio). Renaming .m4a to .mp4 usually still plays fine — most players detect content by internal track metadata, not file extension.
