Quality & Compatibility
This is a lossy-to-lossy transcode, so a tiny amount of generational loss occurs. At matching bitrates (e.g. MP3 @ 192 kbps → AAC @ 192 kbps) the loss is imperceptible for music. For archival integrity, always keep the MP3 as the master.
Tips for Best Results
- Do not increase the bitrate during conversion — encoding AAC at 256 kbps from a 128 kbps MP3 only wastes bytes.
- Copy ID3 tags to the M4A metadata in Advanced so artist/album/cover art carry across correctly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Lossy-to-lossy conversions (most combinations) re-compress the audio, which technically introduces some loss. At a 192 kbps or higher target it is inaudible on normal equipment. Lossy-to-lossless conversions freeze the existing quality but cannot improve it; lossless-to-lossy transcodes are only as good as the target bitrate you choose.
Container-wise yes — M4A is the audio-only sibling of MP4. The extension change signals audio-only content to OS players and Apple libraries. Audio codec inside is AAC by default.
For voice content (podcasts, audiobooks, lectures) 128 kbps is indistinguishable from higher bitrates. For music, 192-256 kbps covers most listening; 320 kbps is the ceiling for M4A and the right choice for audio you plan to edit further. Above that, prefer a lossless target instead.
At matching bitrates, slightly smaller — AAC is marginally more efficient than MP3. Most of the perceived difference comes from bitrate, not codec, so a 128 kbps M4A will sound better than a 128 kbps MP3.
Yes. Title, artist, album, year and cover art travel from the MP3 container to the M4A container automatically where both formats support them. If a tag field has no M4A equivalent, it is dropped silently. Use any tag editor (Mp3tag, MusicBrainz Picard) to fine-tune afterwards.
