GIF stores pixels using an indexed color palette capped at 256 entries derived from the image's actual colors via a quantization algorithm — a fundamental limit baked into the format since CompuServe released it in 1987. BMP, by contrast, is a raw bitmap container developed by Microsoft that, in its most common 24-bit variant, stores each pixel as three uncompressed 8-bit channels (R, G, B), giving 16.7 million addressable colors with no palette ceiling. When you convert GIF to BMP, you are expanding from a quantized, palette-indexed representation into a direct, uncompressed one. The per-pixel color data is fully preserved for whatever the GIF's palette actually encoded, but you gain nothing in color richness beyond that palette — a GIF that shows banding due to 256-color quantization will carry that same banding into the BMP. Why convert GIF to BMP
The strongest concrete reason to move a GIF to BMP is to feed an image into a Windows application or embedded system that reads raw DIB (Device-Independent Bitmap) data natively but does not link against an LZW decoder. This comes up in automation scripts using the Windows GDI API, in old document workflows that assemble multi-page TIFFs from BMP frames, and in hardware control panels or scientific instruments whose firmware exposes only a BMP import path. A secondary reason is stripping GIF's LZW compression entirely to get a flat byte layout that predictable memory-mapped I/O or fixed-offset pixel reading requires — BMP pixel data starts at a known offset declared in the file header, making random-access reads trivial without a decoder.

Quality & Compatibility
GIF uses lossless LZW compression internally, so the 256-color indexed data survives decompression intact. BMP at 24 bits per pixel stores those same colors without any further lossy step, so the conversion is technically lossless relative to what GIF held. What you lose is animation: GIF supports multiple frames with per-frame delays and disposal methods; BMP is a single-frame format, so only the first frame is written and all subsequent frames are discarded. GIF also supports one transparent color index via its Graphics Control Extension; BMP in its standard 24-bit form has no alpha channel or transparency mechanism, so transparent pixels are composited to a solid background (typically white or black depending on the converter) rather than preserved as alpha. If the GIF was 8-bit grayscale the resulting BMP will be 24-bit with R=G=B per pixel, tripling file size with no visual benefit. File size increases sharply because BMP stores raw uncompressed rows padded to 4-byte boundaries, versus GIF's LZW-compressed stream.
Tips for Best Results
- If your GIF is animated and only the first frame matters, verify which frame the converter extracts by default — some tools take the last frame or a merged composite rather than frame 0, which will produce unexpected output for sprites or loading animations.
- Because BMP rows are padded to multiples of 4 bytes, the output file size will equal (width rounded up to next multiple of 4) times height times 3 bytes for a 24-bit BMP, plus a 54-byte header — calculate this beforehand to confirm the converter did not silently re-compress or downsample.
- If the GIF uses a transparent color index and your downstream application needs that region to stay white rather than black, set the background compositing color explicitly before converting — most converters default to black (RGB 0,0,0) for transparent pixels in BMP output, which can ruin cutout graphics intended for print workflows.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the codecs involved. If both GIF and BMP are lossy, the pixels are re-encoded and a small amount of detail is discarded — invisible at default quality settings on photographs. If BMP is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) the output keeps every pixel of the decoded GIF exactly, but cannot recover detail that GIF had already compressed away.
Often yes, especially when BMP is lossless. GIF tuned for efficient web delivery will usually produce smaller files than BMP's default settings. If file size matters, drop the quality in Advanced or pick a more compressed target format instead.
