GIF encodes animation as a sequence of indexed-color frames, each limited to a 256-entry palette drawn from 8-bit RGB — no alpha channel with partial transparency, no support for more than one bit of transparency per pixel, and no inter-frame compression beyond a basic LZW pass on each frame independently. That palette ceiling is what drives most conversions: a photographic subject or gradient inside a looping clip looks dithered and banded in GIF, and the file is large because every frame is stored almost in full. AVIF, backed by the AV1 video codec and the ISOBMFF container, breaks all of those constraints at once. It supports 8-, 10-, and 12-bit color depth, full YUV 4:2:0 / 4:4:4 chroma sampling, a genuine alpha channel encoded as a separate AV1 bitstream at arbitrary opacity levels, HDR metadata (PQ and HLG transfer functions), and inter-frame prediction that shares data across frames the way a video codec does. A looping animated AVIF is stored as an AV1 image sequence with a repetition-count field; browsers that support it — Chromium 85 and later, Firefox 113 and later, Safari 16 and later on macOS Ventura and iOS 16 — play it natively as a drop-in replacement for an animated GIF src attribute.

Why convert GIF to AVIF
The dominant reason is file size. An animated GIF of a screen recording or a colorful cartoon can be 3 to 10 times larger than an equivalent animated AVIF at visually identical quality, because AV1 uses motion estimation and temporal prediction while GIF compresses each frame independently with LZW. A secondary reason is color fidelity: GIF's 256-color palette forces dithering on any gradient or photographic frame, producing visible noise that AVIF eliminates by encoding full-range chroma. A third reason is smooth alpha: AVIF's separate alpha bitstream allows per-pixel partial transparency at every opacity level, whereas GIF can only mark individual palette entries as fully transparent, making anti-aliased edges against variable backgrounds impossible in GIF.

Quality & Compatibility
Animation frames are preserved as an AV1 image sequence with the original frame timing carried over from GIF's frame delay values. GIF's single-bit transparency (palette index marked transparent) maps to a binary mask in the AVIF alpha channel — edges that were aliased in GIF remain aliased; no new anti-aliasing is synthesized. Color depth expands from 8-bit indexed RGB to 8-bit YUV 4:2:0 by default, which can introduce very slight chroma blur on fine color detail at sub-pixel boundaries, though this is rarely visible at normal viewing sizes. The LZW lossless compression of GIF is replaced by AV1's lossy intra and inter coding; at high quality settings the perceptual difference is negligible, but the codec is lossy by nature and pixel-exact reproduction is not guaranteed. GIF metadata fields (comment extension, application extension blocks such as Netscape looping) are not carried to AVIF; loop count is re-encoded natively in the AVIF animation box.
Tips for Best Results
- Keep frame count in mind: animated AVIF encoding is compute-heavy proportional to frame count and resolution; GIFs with hundreds of frames at 600 px wide or more will take noticeably longer to process than short two-frame loaders.
- If your GIF uses hard-edge transparency for a logo or icon on a colored background, verify the output in a browser before publishing — the binary alpha maps correctly, but if you later place the AVIF on a new background color you will see the same jagged edges that existed in the original GIF.
- Browser support for animated AVIF is broad in 2024 Chromium and Firefox but absent in older WebKit builds; if you need a fallback for Safari versions before 16, keep the original GIF as a fallback source in a picture element with the AVIF as the preferred source.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the codecs involved. If both GIF and AVIF are lossy, the pixels are re-encoded and a small amount of detail is discarded — invisible at default quality settings on photographs. If AVIF is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) the output keeps every pixel of the decoded GIF exactly, but cannot recover detail that GIF had already compressed away.
Often yes, especially when AVIF is lossless. GIF tuned for efficient web delivery will usually produce smaller files than AVIF's default settings. If file size matters, drop the quality in Advanced or pick a more compressed target format instead.
