Starting point: FLV is the Adobe Flash Video container, now deprecated but still lingering in archives. Natural next step, a WAV. Strip a FLV down to just its WAV audio track for playback on devices that cannot (or should not) show video. This is how most audiobook and podcast workflows start — take a FLV master, emit a WAV distribution copy, discard the picture track. A quick refresher — FLV is the Adobe Flash Video container, now deprecated but still lingering in archives. By contrast, WAV is Microsoft's uncompressed PCM container — the studio master format on Windows.
Flash Video
Source formatFLV was the dominant web video format during the Flash era. While Flash is now deprecated, many legacy video files still exist in FLV format and need conversion to modern formats.
WAV Audio
Target formatWAV is an uncompressed audio format that preserves full audio fidelity. Files are large but provide lossless, CD-quality sound. It is the standard working format in audio production and editing.
Why convert FLV to WAV
WAV is the lingua franca of audio: car stereos, Bluetooth speakers, voice assistants and music apps all expect it. A FLV cannot be uploaded to most of those ecosystems, but the WAV you extract today will play anywhere tomorrow.
HOW TO CONVERT
FLV → WAV
Start the job
Upload your FLV; the pipeline auto-detects the audio codec and the best extraction strategy.
Demux to WAV
FFmpeg pulls the audio track out of the FLV container and writes a clean WAV.
Save the result
Click download. The video track never leaves our processing container unmodified — we only returned the audio you asked for.
Common Use Cases
Share across platforms
Send WAV files to anyone without worrying about whether they have the right software for FLV.
Embed in documents
Drop WAV output into Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, Notion or a website without conversion warnings.
Optimize size
WAV often produces smaller files than FLV for web, email and storage.
Archive & future-proof
Store in a widely-supported format that will still open on future operating systems without legacy plugins.
FLV vs WAV — Strengths and limitations
What each format does best, and where it falls short.
FLV Strengths
- Low overhead — the container is extremely compact.
- Designed for streaming — progressive download and seeking work well.
- Decoded natively by Flash Player on every OS for 20 years.
Limitations
- Flash Player is dead — no modern browser can play FLV without conversion.
- Legacy codecs (Sorenson, VP6) are poorly supported in modern tooling.
- Hardware video decoders never added FLV support.
WAV Strengths
- Bit-perfect, uncompressed audio — the professional studio standard.
- Universally supported for playback, editing, and analysis.
- No re-encoding penalty — edit and save repeatedly with zero quality loss.
- Simple internal structure — easy to parse programmatically.
- Supports up to 32-bit float and 384 kHz sample rates.
Limitations
- Enormous file sizes — 10 MB per minute for CD-quality stereo.
- 4 GB size limit for standard WAV (RF64/W64 variants extend it but break compatibility).
- No native support for cover art or rich metadata.

FLV vs WAV — Typical file sizes
Approximate file sizes for common scenarios.
FLV
- 10-min YouTube 2008-era video 40-80 MB
- 45-min TV show (FLV H.264) 200-500 MB
WAV
- Song (4 min, CD quality) 40 MB
- Voice memo (1 min, 16-bit 44.1 kHz) 10 MB
- Studio master (1 min, 24-bit 96 kHz) 33 MB
- Field recording (1 hour, 24-bit 48 kHz) 1 GB
Quality & Compatibility
Metadata such as track title, artist and chapter markers survive when the FLV carries them in a form the WAV supports. If the source FLV lacks tagging, the WAV will be untagged — that is not a conversion bug, it is simply the source data.
Tips for Best Results
- For spoken-word content (podcasts, lectures), 64-96 kbps is indistinguishable from higher rates and saves storage dramatically.
- For music, do not drop the WAV bitrate below the audio bitrate of the source FLV, otherwise you introduce a second lossy stage.
- Record your extraction settings once and reuse them — consistent bitrate and sample rate across an archive makes downstream tooling happier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The free tier accepts files up to 25 MB without registration, email capture or watermarks; paid plans go up to 2 GB. Paid plans raise the size cap, enable batch conversions and provide a REST API for automation, but nothing on the free tier is quality-limited — the output is exactly the same as on any paid plan.
Only if the audio codec inside FLV is not directly writable into the WAV container. When codecs match we stream-copy, producing a bit-exact WAV. When they differ, we re-encode at a high-quality default, so the perceptual loss is tiny for anything other than lossless-to-lossless mismatches.
Uploads run over HTTPS, files are processed in isolated containers, and both the source FLV and the WAV output are auto-deleted within two hours. No account is required, file contents are never logged, and KaijuConverter does not use uploads for AI training. The paid plan adds a signable data-processing agreement for regulated workflows.
No. The full FLV lands in our processing container, we demux the audio locally and then the container is destroyed. The video bytes never leave KaijuConverter infrastructure and auto-delete within two hours along with the original file.
Most files finish in well under a minute. Small images and documents are typically ready in a few seconds; large video or audio files scale roughly with duration. Upload speed from your network is usually the dominant factor, not server time.
Yes. The Advanced options let you set start and end times in HH:MM:SS, so you can extract a single chapter, a specific quote or a clean sample instead of the full duration of the FLV.
