FLV (Flash Video) was built around the H.263 and later H.264 video codec paired with an MP3 or AAC audio track, all wrapped in Adobe's proprietary container. By 2020 every major browser had dropped Flash Player entirely, which means an FLV file that once played directly in a web embed now requires either a legacy media player or a third-party codec pack on Windows — and fails outright on macOS Monterey and later without additional software. WMV (Windows Media Video), built on the VC-1 codec inside a Microsoft ASF container, is natively decoded by Windows Media Player on every Windows release since XP and is still the container format expected by certain Windows-centric workflows: Windows Movie Maker imports, legacy corporate video archives, and some digital signage systems that still target the Windows Media stack. Quality & Compatibility

FLV files using H.263 video suffer a generational quality loss when re-encoded to VC-1 (WMV): H.263 is already a lossy codec, so the transcoding introduces a second compression pass. FLV files that carry H.264 video lose less detail but still go through a full decode-and-re-encode cycle since WMV does not passthrough H.264 streams. Bit depth is 8-bit in both cases — neither format supports 10-bit or HDR. Neither container has a meaningful alpha-channel video track in practice, so transparency is a non-issue. Audio transcoding from MP3 or AAC (FLV) to WMA (the default audio codec in ASF/WMV) is also a lossy-to-lossy step. Embedded metadata such as creation date and author fields may not survive the container change, as the FLV metadata model (AMF key-value pairs) has no direct equivalent in the ASF header structure.

If the codecs inside FLV (usually H.264 or H.265 for video, AAC for audio) are accepted by WMV, we stream-copy — the bytes are repackaged into the new container with zero re-encoding and no quality loss. When the source uses a codec the target does not support, we transcode at a matching bitrate to keep the visual quality close to the original.

With stream copy, expect the job to finish in seconds to tens of seconds regardless of video length — the work is mostly rewriting the container. Transcoding is slower (roughly real-time: a ten-minute clip takes about ten minutes) because every frame must be decoded and re-encoded. The progress bar shows which mode applies.

Yes. Resolution, frame rate, colour space and bit depth are preserved by default; stream copy is literally bit-identical on these parameters. If you explicitly pick a lower bitrate or a different codec in Advanced, the output is rebuilt to those settings, but the default is always "match the source".
