ODT — OpenDocument Text — is the flagship format of the OpenDocument Format (ODF) family, standardized by OASIS in 2005 and approved as ISO/IEC 26300 the following year. It was born from OpenOffice’s earlier SXW format, itself descended from StarOffice’s binary XML format. The design goals were explicit: fully open, vendor-neutral, and immune to corporate lock-in.
ODF became the default in LibreOffice, OpenOffice, and most Linux distributions. It also became a political format — several European governments (Netherlands, UK, Italy) mandate ODF for public documents to avoid dependency on Microsoft Office. In the real world, most .odt files end up converted to DOCX for the last-mile delivery, but the format remains the principled choice for open-source workflows.

An .odt is a ZIP archive — same idea as DOCX but with different XML schemas inside.
The UK government in 2014 mandated ODF for public documents, saving an estimated £1.2 billion in Microsoft Office licenses.
Every .odt file includes a mandatory META-INF/manifest.xml listing every other file — strict by design.
The ODF TC considered and rejected compatibility with Office Open XML; the two standards evolved deliberately in parallel.
ODF 1.3 (2020) added strong encryption, digital signatures, and change tracking improvements.
