MKV (Matroska Video) é o contêiner de vídeo open source mais flexível disponível. Aceita praticamente qualquer codec, suporta múltiplas faixas de áudio (idiomas), legendas embutidas selecionáveis, capítulos e metadados ricos. É o padrão de fato para arquivamento de filmes/séries (rips de Blu-ray) e para uso com servers media tipo Plex, Jellyfin e Kodi. Limitação: iPhone/iPad não reproduz nativamente.

FORMATO MKV.

Matroska (MKV) was started in 2002 by Steve Lhomme and a small team as an open-source, patent-unencumbered alternative to AVI. The name is a play on "matryoshka" — the Russian nesting dolls — because the container stores everything in a hierarchy of nested elements. The file format is defined using EBML (Extensible Binary Meta Language), the binary cousin of XML.

MKV’s rise was quiet but relentless. Anime fansubs adopted it first because it could carry hardcoded plus softcoded subtitles in multiple languages, attached fonts, chapters, and multiple audio tracks — everything an anime release needed. Then WebM, a subset of MKV for web video, was adopted by YouTube for VP9 and later AV1. Today every release group on the internet ships MKV, every modern player decodes it (VLC, mpv, Kodi), and most hardware video players finally handle it.

WebM is literally a subset of MKV — the same container with different codecs (VP8/VP9/AV1 + Vorbis/Opus).

Matroska is named after Russian nesting dolls — because the format nests elements inside elements.

A single MKV can hold dozens of subtitle tracks, attached fonts, chapter menus, and arbitrary binary attachments.

The format is patent-free — the only reason it is not the default everywhere is inertia.

Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby all prefer MKV as their master library format for exactly that reason.

Hardware decoders on older TVs and streamers often reject MKV.
Because it allows any codec, compatibility varies wildly by player.
