COMO NASCEU O
FORMATO LIT.
LIT — Microsoft Reader — was Microsoft’s bet on the early ebook market, launched in 2000 alongside the Microsoft Reader app for Windows and Pocket PC. LIT files used Microsoft’s ClearType technology to render text more crisply on screen than competing formats; the software was genuinely good for its era. The catch was DRM: most commercial LIT books were tied to a specific Microsoft Passport account (the precursor to Microsoft Account).
Microsoft Reader never took off. Adobe’s PDF dominated technical ebooks; Amazon’s Kindle arrived in 2007 and ate the consumer market; the iBookstore swept in mobile. Microsoft killed Reader development around 2011 and shut down the final activation servers in August 2012, stranding every DRM-protected LIT purchase as unusable files. The format survives in some library archives and in collectors’ personal libraries — a cautionary tale about ebook DRM that the industry mostly ignored.
CURIOSIDADES E
FATOS INTERESSANTES.
Microsoft shut down the Microsoft Reader DRM activation servers in August 2012, making every commercially-purchased LIT file unreadable without emergency workarounds.
LIT used ClearType subpixel rendering before most operating systems had it built in — the app genuinely looked gorgeous in its day.
A .lit file is internally similar to CHM (Compiled HTML Help) — both use Microsoft's LZX compression.
Library ebook lending systems like OverDrive briefly supported LIT before abandoning it for EPUB and Kindle formats.
The Microsoft Reader app itself was a free download, but Microsoft made no new releases after 2011 — it languishes in Windows 7-era screenshots.
