TGZ is shorthand for .tar.gz — a tar archive that has been gzip-compressed. The tradition of renaming `.tar.gz` to `.tgz` dates from the 1990s when DOS and some mail servers struggled with filenames containing two dots. Unix purists write ".tar.gz"; pragmatists write ".tgz". Both files are byte-identical.
Every Linux distribution, every source code tarball, every release of pretty much any open-source project has shipped as .tar.gz or .tgz for 30+ years. It’s the default "here is a bundle of files, compressed" on every Unix-like system. Xz and zstd beat gzip on compression ratio, but the combined ubiquity of tar and gzip makes .tgz the defensive default when you don’t know what the receiver’s toolchain supports.
