JPEG 2000 was the JPEG committee’s first attempt at a successor to their 1992 standard. Released in 2000 as ISO/IEC 15444, it replaced JPEG’s discrete cosine transform with discrete wavelet transform — a completely different math that avoided JPEG’s blocky artifacts and enabled true lossless compression in the same framework. At equal quality JP2 files were about 20-30% smaller than JPEG.
It should have won. It didn’t. Patents held by multiple contributors made the format a licensing minefield, browser vendors declined to support it, and JPEG’s ubiquity was insurmountable. JP2 found homes in narrow professional niches: cinema distribution (Digital Cinema Initiatives’ DCP standard uses JP2 for every frame of a theatrical release), medical imaging (DICOM), and national archives (Library of Congress, BnF France). Outside those worlds it never took off.
