DFF — DSD Interchange File Format — is DSF’s older sibling. Philips and Sony introduced SACD (Super Audio CD) in 1999 using Direct Stream Digital 1-bit audio at 2.8 MHz. Philips standardized DFF around 2001 as a container for delivering SACD masters to pressing plants. Unlike Sony’s later DSF (2005), DFF has no native metadata support and no streaming tricks — it’s a pure bitstream wrapper.
DFF is the format SACD mastering engineers use when they receive files from studios. A DFF file of a full album runs 2-6 GB depending on DSD rate. Consumer users who rip SACDs typically end up with DFF files; audiophile communities argue about whether DFF or DSF is better for archival (the answer is: it doesn’t matter, the audio content is identical).
