Canon CR2 (Canon RAW version 2) shipped in 2004 with the EOS-1D Mark II, replacing the earlier CRW format that had been used since the D30 (2000). Technically CR2 is a TIFF variant — specifically a TIFF/EP file with Canon’s own proprietary metadata tags for shooting parameters, picture styles, and lens-correction data.
Canon maintained CR2 for over 13 years, through every Rebel, 5D Mark II/III/IV, and 1D series body until 2018, when the EOS M50 introduced CR3. A CR2 file from 2004 still opens in modern Canon DPP or Adobe Camera Raw — a remarkable feat of backward compatibility.

CR2 is a TIFF file under the hood — the format extension is Canon's private IFD (Image File Directory) of tags.
Every Canon DSLR from 2004 to 2018 shot CR2 — billions of RAW files in the format still exist in wedding, sports, and nature photographer archives.
The CR2 file contains a full-resolution JPEG preview alongside the raw sensor data — which is what most software uses for thumbnails.
Canon DPP (Digital Photo Professional) is the only software that applies Canon Picture Styles exactly as the camera intended.
Canon does not publish the CR2 specification — every third-party RAW processor (Lightroom, Capture One, Darktable) reverse-engineered it.
