HOW CBR
CAME TO BE.

CBR — Comic Book RAR — is CBZ’s older sibling, using RAR compression instead of ZIP. The convention came from the same early-2000s comic-scanlation communities and was arguably more popular than CBZ until about 2012, when RAR’s proprietary nature started to annoy open-source purists and CBZ took over as the default.

RAR has one real advantage over ZIP: better compression ratios. In practice the gain is marginal on already-compressed JPEG pages (5-10%) and meaningless when modern drives cost pennies per MB. But CBR lives on: pirate archives from the 2000s are full of CBR files, and every serious comic reader still handles them. ComicRack, CDisplay, YACReader, and Comic Universe all unpack RAR for you; the user rarely notices the difference.

TRIVIA.

CBR predates CBZ by a few months — RAR-based archives dominated comic scanlation in 2002-2003 before ZIP caught up.

RAR compression gives CBR a 5-10% size advantage over CBZ on mixed-JPEG pages — imperceptible in practice.

WinRAR's proprietary license scared open-source comic readers away from CBR around 2012, nudging CBZ to the default.

Some readers cannot decrypt RAR5 CBR files created with WinRAR 5.0+ — an old-vs-new CBR gotcha.

CBR and CBZ files can be renamed interchangeably once extracted — the internal structure is identical numbered images.
