Die Geschichte

WIE DAS
FORMAT DOC ENTSTAND.

The .doc file dates all the way back to Microsoft Word 1.0 for MS-DOS (October 1983). For the first decade it was a simple binary stream; then Word 97 (1997) switched to the OLE Compound File format — essentially a miniature filesystem inside a single file. That structure allowed Word to embed other Office objects (Excel sheets, charts, drawings) as first-class citizens while staying backward-compatible.

For 24 years .doc ruled the office. Its grip loosened in 2007 when Word adopted DOCX as default, and today .doc is mostly a legacy fallback — you still encounter it in government archives, law firms with old systems, and emails from the user who installed Office 2003 and never updated. The format remains supported in every Word version for compatibility, but Microsoft stopped improving it in 2007.

WISSENSWERTES UND
INTERESSANTE FAKTEN.

01

A .doc file from Word 97 is actually an OLE Compound File — a tiny hierarchical filesystem inside one file.

02

Microsoft released the full binary specification (1 200+ pages) only in 2008, under antitrust pressure.

03

Hidden revision history inside some .doc files exposed deleted names in high-profile political documents — a privacy scandal in the 2000s.

04

Word kept a "fast save" mode that appended deltas rather than rewriting the file — which is why old .doc files sometimes contain fragments of earlier edits.

05

The maximum table size in Word 97-2003 is 63 columns — a hard limit many academics discovered the hard way.

VORTEILE UND
EINSCHRÄNKUNGEN.

Vorteile

  • Universal compatibility — every Word version since 1997 reads it natively.
  • Rich feature set: styles, tables, comments, track changes, embedded OLE objects.
  • Binary format means fast loading even on slow machines.
  • Well-understood after decades of reverse-engineering — dozens of parsers exist.

Einschränkungen

  • Legacy format — Microsoft stopped improving it in 2007; new features require DOCX.
  • Binary structure is fragile; corruption often makes files unrecoverable.
  • Historic malware magnet: embedded macros have spread viruses since the 1990s.
  • Not open-standard — DOCX is the ISO-standardized successor.
  • Subtle formatting drifts when opened in LibreOffice or Google Docs.
