AVI — Audio Video Interleave — launched with Microsoft’s Video for Windows runtime in November 1992, built on the RIFF container Microsoft had introduced a year earlier for WAV audio. The design trick was right in the name: audio and video chunks are interleaved in the file so a playback engine can read one block of video, one block of audio, one block of video, and stream them to the decoder without seeking.
For a decade AVI was the Windows video format. Every Compaq PC came with Video for Windows preinstalled, every digital camera that recorded video produced AVI, and the entire early fan-sub anime scene and early divx piracy ran on AVI. The format is technically ancient — no proper support for modern subtitles, chapters, metadata, or variable frame rates — but its simplicity means you still encounter .avi files in security-camera exports, vintage game cut-scenes, and old family DV tape captures.

AVI's hard 2 GB file-size limit (later 4 GB) forced the "split into multiple files" workflow that defined early fan-subbing.
The original 1992 spec had no provision for variable bitrate video — a huge problem when MPEG-4 codecs arrived.
DivX, XviD, and the early 2000s piracy scene normalized AVI + MP3 audio as the default internet video format.
AVI does not support soft subtitles — subtitle tracks have to be burned into the video or shipped as external .srt files.
Modern codecs like H.265 technically work inside AVI but tooling is fragile and nobody does it.
