PDF is a fixed-layout format: each page is a resolved snapshot where text, images, and vector paths have already been flattened into a coordinate space with no concept of slides, transitions, or editable placeholders. When LibreOffice Impress opens a PDF for conversion to PPTX, it runs the built-in PDF import filter, which maps each PDF page to one presentation slide. The catch is structural: PDF stores glyphs as positioned drawing objects, not as paragraphs inside text boxes. Impress reconstructs text areas by grouping nearby glyph runs heuristically, which works well for simple layouts but breaks on multi-column text, rotated labels, tables without visible borders, and any content that was rasterized before being embedded in the PDF. The resulting PPTX slides are therefore closer to vector drawings than to editable decks — you can move and resize objects freely, but editing a headline often means selecting individual fragmented text runs rather than a single clean placeholder.

Quality & Compatibility

No alpha channel concern exists here since PDF does not use alpha transparency in the same sense as raster formats — PDF uses compositing operators, and Impress preserves opacity groupings as grouped shapes with matching fill transparency. Vector paths and embedded SVG content survive well: Impress maps PDF path operators to DrawingML geometry. Raster images embedded in the PDF (JPEG, JPEG2000, CCITT Group 4, Flate-compressed PNG-like streams) are extracted and re-embedded into the PPTX picture elements at their original resolution and compression, so a 300 dpi photo stays 300 dpi. Font embedding is the biggest quality loss: PDF may embed font subsets using arbitrary internal names, and if Impress cannot match those to an installed system font, it substitutes a fallback, changing metrics and line breaks. Color spaces convert cleanly for sRGB and DeviceRGB content; CMYK-heavy print PDFs may shift slightly because PPTX DrawingML does not natively represent CMYK, forcing an sRGB conversion without ICC profile awareness.
