MPEG is the reference container for MPEG-1/2 video, the foundation of digital broadcast. Reaching a TS from there is one hop. A MPEG to TS conversion rescues a clip that refuses to play somewhere important — a phone, a smart TV, a web uploader. KaijuConverter uses FFmpeg under the hood, the same engine video professionals rely on, and prioritises stream-copy over re-encode so the output stays faithful to the source. In practice MPEG is the reference container for MPEG-1/2 video, the foundation of digital broadcast. On the other end, TS is the MPEG transport stream, used in broadcast and HLS streaming segments.

mpeg

MPEG Video

Source format

MPEG is an early digital video standard that formed the basis for later formats like MP4. MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files are common in DVD rips and older digital video archives.

ts

MPEG Transport Stream

Target format

TS (Transport Stream) is used for broadcasting, streaming, and recording live TV.

MPEG vs TS — What's the difference?

Why convert MPEG to TS

The usual reason to convert from MPEG into TS is the same reason anyone transcodes video: the original container is not accepted where you are trying to send the file. Swapping to TS flips that rejection into a clean upload without altering the footage itself.

HOW TO CONVERT
MPEG → TS

1

Provide the MPEG clip

Upload through the browser; transfers are encrypted end-to-end and files are quarantined per session.

2

Convert to TS

The conversion keeps resolution, frame rate and bit depth identical to the source unless you explicitly override them.

3

Save to your device

Click download to pull the TS to local storage; share the short-lived URL with collaborators if needed.

Common Use Cases

Share across platforms

Send TS files to anyone without worrying about whether they have the right software for MPEG.

Embed in documents

Drop TS output into Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, Notion or a website without conversion warnings.

Optimize size

TS often produces smaller files than MPEG for web, email and storage.

Archive & future-proof

Store in a widely-supported format that will still open on future operating systems without legacy plugins.

MPEG vs TS — Strengths and limitations

What each format does best, and where it falls short.

MPEG Strengths

  • Universal playback on every OS, player, and DVD/TV hardware since 1995.
  • Proven, well-documented — three decades of spec refinement and tooling.
  • Best-in-class for broadcast — Transport Streams carry multiple channels, error correction, and PSI/SI metadata.
  • Low CPU decoding — even 1990s hardware can handle MPEG-1/2.

Limitations

  • Aging codec — MPEG-2 is 2-3× larger than H.264 at equivalent quality.
  • Patent licensing still active for some MPEG-2 patents in certain territories.
  • Consumer devices rarely default to .mpg — everything ships as .mp4 today.

TS Strengths

  • Designed for noisy channels — packet-level error correction.
  • Multi-program: one TS can carry several TV channels.
  • Native format for all digital TV broadcasts and HLS streaming.
  • Streaming-first: no need to download whole file to start playing.
  • 30+ years of stable, deployed infrastructure.

Limitations

  • Packet overhead (~3% vs Program Stream).
  • Seek index is implicit — requires scanning for random access.
  • Multiple audio/subtitle selection requires parsing PMT (Program Map Tables).

MPEG vs TS — Typical file sizes

Approximate file sizes for common scenarios.

MPEG

  • 2-min VCD clip (MPEG-1) 20-25 MB
  • 2-hour DVD movie (MPEG-2) 4-7 GB
  • 1 channel HDTV broadcast (1 hour) 6-10 GB

TS

  • HLS video segment (6 seconds, 1080p) 2-5 MB
  • 1 hour recorded TV (HD) 4-8 GB
  • Satellite transponder capture (1 min) ~300 MB

Quality & Compatibility

The conversion does not upscale or sharpen the video. A 1080p MPEG produces a 1080p TS; a 4K source stays 4K unless you select a lower output resolution explicitly. Picking higher bitrates does not improve perceived quality beyond the source ceiling.

Tips for Best Results

Frequently Asked Questions

Only when it has to. If the codecs inside MPEG (usually H.264 or H.265 for video, AAC for audio) are accepted by TS, we stream-copy — the bytes are repackaged into the new container with zero re-encoding and no quality loss. When the source uses a codec the target does not support, we transcode at a matching bitrate to keep the visual quality close to the original.

With stream copy, expect the job to finish in seconds to tens of seconds regardless of video length — the work is mostly rewriting the container. Transcoding is slower (roughly real-time: a ten-minute clip takes about ten minutes) because every frame must be decoded and re-encoded. The progress bar shows which mode applies.

Yes. Resolution, frame rate, colour space and bit depth are preserved by default; stream copy is literally bit-identical on these parameters. If you explicitly pick a lower bitrate or a different codec in Advanced, the output is rebuilt to those settings, but the default is always "match the source".
