Quality & Compatibility
Because the conversion is a container re-wrap with no re-encoding, video quality is fully preserved at whatever bit depth and chroma subsampling the original MP4 carried — typically 8-bit 4:2:0 for H.264 or 10-bit 4:2:0 for H.265 HDR content. The AAC audio streams, AC-3 Dolby tracks, or any multichannel audio in the source survive intact. Subtitle tracks (SRT-derived text or MPEG-4 Timed Text) are carried across without modification. What the output file may gain is an iTunes-specific ilst metadata atom for title, artwork, and media kind. What it loses: nothing at the stream level. The only caveat is that if the source MP4 contains a codec Apple hardware does not support — HEVC Main 10 on very old Apple TV models, for example — the M4V container will not fix that incompatibility; it only changes the wrapper, not the codec.
Tips for Best Results
- If your converted M4V will be imported into iTunes and you want it recognized as a movie rather than a home video, open iTunes after import, right-click the file, choose Get Info, and set the Media Kind to Movie — the M4V container supports this metadata but the converter does not set it automatically.
- DRM-protected M4V files purchased from the iTunes Store cannot be re-wrapped or re-encoded by any online tool, including this one — only DRM-free M4V files can be processed. If your source MP4 came from a camera, Handbrake, or a DRM-free download, it will convert without issue.
- M4V files above 4 GB play fine on macOS and modern Apple TV but will not sync to iPod classic or first-generation iPod touch, which use a FAT32-derived sync path with a 4 GB file limit — split long videos before converting if those devices are your target.

If the codecs inside MP4 (usually H.264 or H.265 for video, AAC for audio) are accepted by M4V, we stream-copy — the bytes are repackaged into the new container with zero re-encoding and no quality loss. When the source uses a codec the target does not support, we transcode at a matching bitrate to keep the visual quality close to the original.
With stream copy, expect the job to finish in seconds to tens of seconds regardless of video length — the work is mostly rewriting the container. Transcoding is slower (roughly real-time: a ten-minute clip takes about ten minutes) because every frame must be decoded and re-encoded. The progress bar shows which mode applies.
Yes. Resolution, frame rate, colour space and bit depth are preserved by default; stream copy is literally bit-identical on these parameters. If you explicitly pick a lower bitrate or a different codec in Advanced, the output is rebuilt to those settings, but the default is always "match the source".
