HEIC uses HEVC (H.265) intra-frame compression to store photographs, which typically cuts file size roughly in half compared to JPEG at equivalent visual quality. That efficiency comes from a lossy codec designed for display pipelines — not archival or print workflows. TIFF, by contrast, is a container format that supports lossless or uncompressed storage, full 16-bit-per-channel depth, CMYK color spaces, embedded ICC profiles, and multi-page sequences. The conversion from HEIC to TIFF is almost always driven by one of three needs: sending files to an application that has no HEIC decoder (most non-Apple desktop software before 2022), preparing images for a print production chain that requires CMYK or demands a lossless source, or creating an archival copy that does not depend on HEVC patent licensing or Apple-specific codec support. Once an image is committed to HEIC, the pixel data has already passed through the lossy HEVC encoder, so converting to TIFF produces a lossless container holding data that was already lossy — the TIFF itself introduces no further generation loss, but it cannot recover what HEVC discarded at capture time.

Why convert HEIC to TIFF
The dominant reason is application compatibility. Windows Photo Viewer, most Linux image editors, older versions of Photoshop, virtually all prepress RIP engines, and many web CMS platforms cannot open HEIC natively. TIFF is one of the oldest and most universally decoded formats in existence — any software that handles raster images reads it. A secondary driver is 16-bit color depth: HEIC on iPhone can store HDR content using HEVC Main 10 profile at 10 bits per channel, and a TIFF conversion preserving 16-bit depth lets you retain that dynamic range headroom for further editing in Lightroom, Affinity Photo, or GIMP without clipping highlights into 8-bit.

Quality & Compatibility
No pixel-level quality is lost during the TIFF encoding step itself, because TIFF with LZW or uncompressed storage is lossless. However, HEIC's HEVC lossy compression has already permanently discarded high-frequency detail before conversion begins. Color space is preserved faithfully if the HEIC's embedded Display P3 or sRGB ICC profile is read and written into the TIFF ICC metadata chunk — without that step the image may appear desaturated in applications that assume sRGB. Transparency (alpha channel) in HEIC files is supported by HEVC Main Still Picture and will be preserved in TIFF as a standard alpha channel. EXIF and XMP metadata blocks embedded in the HEIC container are carried over into the TIFF's metadata fields. The resulting TIFF will be substantially larger: a 12 MP HEIC at 3–4 MB typically expands to 35–70 MB uncompressed TIFF, or 20–40 MB with LZW compression.
Tips for Best Results
- If your HEIC was shot in HDR on an iPhone 12 or later, choose 16-bit TIFF output to preserve the full 10-bit-per-channel dynamic range — an 8-bit TIFF will clip highlights and crush shadows irreversibly.
- Check whether your destination application expects an ICC profile before sending the TIFF: HEIC files from iPhones commonly use Display P3, which has a wider gamut than sRGB, and importing a Display P3 TIFF into software that ignores embedded profiles will make colors look oversaturated or shifted.
- For print workflows, confirm your prepress software can handle RGB TIFF before converting — TIFF supports CMYK, but kaijuconverter outputs RGB TIFF, so a separate color-space conversion step in a color-managed application is required before sending to a CMYK print pipeline.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the codecs involved. If both HEIC and TIFF are lossy, the pixels are re-encoded and a small amount of detail is discarded — invisible at default quality settings on photographs. If TIFF is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) the output keeps every pixel of the decoded HEIC exactly, but cannot recover detail that HEIC had already compressed away.
Often yes, especially when TIFF is lossless. HEIC tuned for efficient web delivery will usually produce smaller files than TIFF's default settings. If file size matters, drop the quality in Advanced or pick a more compressed target format instead.
