EPUB body text, heading hierarchy (h1–h6 mapped to Word Heading 1–6 styles), and basic inline emphasis (bold, italic) survive well. Ordered and unordered lists convert cleanly. What degrades or disappears: CSS-driven layout (multi-column, float-positioned figures, custom fonts, drop caps) collapses to flat unstyled paragraphs; SVG illustrations embedded in the EPUB either drop entirely or land as rasterized images at screen resolution; MathML equations — common in academic EPUBs — are frequently lost or substituted with plain-text approximations; EPUB3 media overlays and audio synchronization have no DOCX equivalent and are discarded; custom EPUB metadata (dc:creator, dc:publisher, rights statements) does not map to DOCX core properties automatically. Footnotes and endnotes in EPUB3 aside elements may or may not be detected as true Word footnotes depending on the conversion path — they can end up as inline parenthetical text instead. No alpha channel or color-space issue applies here since both formats are text containers, but embedded raster images retain their original bit depth.
Tips for Best Results
- If your EPUB contains MathML equations, verify them manually after conversion — most converters substitute plain-text fallbacks or drop the markup entirely, and Word's equation editor uses OMML, a completely separate XML dialect.
- Multi-file EPUBs (one XHTML file per chapter) are stitched into a single DOCX body during conversion; check that chapter headings landed at the correct outline level (Heading 1 vs Heading 2) because the spine reading order drives the merge sequence, not semantic hierarchy.
- Footnotes in EPUB3 are typically marked with epub:type="footnote" on aside elements — confirm whether the converter detected them as true Word footnotes or left them as inline text, since the difference matters for any subsequent typesetting workflow.
