Fast, secure AI to SVG conversion. No registration required.
Here is the short version — AI is Adobe Illustrator's native vector artwork format, based on PDF underneath. Hence the need for SVG. Need a SVG for a CMS, a chat message or an email client that politely refuses AI? This tool re-encodes your image in the background and returns a drop-in SVG replacement. No registration, no watermark, no visual change beyond what the SVG encoder itself introduces. Context: AI is Adobe Illustrator's native vector artwork format, based on PDF underneath. SVG is an XML-based vector format that scales to any resolution without pixel loss.

Adobe Illustrator
Source formatAI (Adobe Illustrator) is a proprietary vector graphics format used by Adobe Illustrator for creating logos, illustrations, and print designs. Modern AI files are based on PDF internally and can contain both vector paths and embedded raster images.
SVG Vector Image
Target formatSVG is an XML-based vector image format that scales to any resolution without quality loss. It is the standard for web icons, logos, and illustrations that need to look sharp on all screen sizes.
Why convert AI to SVG
Converting keeps the picture recognisable end-to-end while changing the container that ships it. SVG typically wins on one of three fronts: broader software support, smaller files for the same visual quality, or features like transparency that AI cannot express. The conversion itself is fast because both sides are raster formats.
HOW TO CONVERT
AI → SVG
Upload your AI
Start by dropping the AI onto the uploader. Files up to 25 MB go through on the free tier without registration; paid plans go up to 2 GB.
Conversion happens server-side
Our imagemagick-based pipeline reads the AI pixel grid, preserves resolution and colour profile, and encodes a clean SVG.

Common Use Cases
Share across platforms
Send SVG files to anyone without worrying about whether they have the right software for AI.
Embed in documents
Drop SVG output into Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, Notion or a website without conversion warnings.
Optimize size
SVG often produces smaller files than AI for web, email and storage.
Archive & future-proof
Store in a widely-supported format that will still open on future operating systems without legacy plugins.
AI vs SVG — Strengths and limitations
What each format does best, and where it falls short.
AI Strengths
- Native format for Adobe Illustrator — full fidelity for every tool, effect, and layer.
- PDF-compatible since Illustrator 9 — any PDF reader can display a flattened preview.
- Supports art boards, symbols, brushes, gradient meshes, and effects.
- Professional print workflow integration — CMYK, spot colors, and color profiles are preserved.
- Tight Creative Cloud integration with Photoshop, InDesign, and After Effects.
Limitations
- Proprietary — true editability requires Adobe Illustrator or a few niche alternatives (Affinity Designer, Inkscape partial).
- Browsers and lightweight viewers show only the flattened PDF preview, not layers.
- Old AI files (pre-v9) are PostScript-based and often unopenable in modern Illustrator.
SVG Strengths
- Resolution-independent — crisp at any size, from 16px icon to 4K billboard.
- Tiny file sizes for flat graphics, logos, and UI illustrations.
- Editable with any text editor; programmatically manipulable via DOM.
- Supports interactivity, CSS styling, and JavaScript inside the image.
- Accessible — text inside SVG is readable by screen readers.
Limitations
- Not suitable for photographs or complex raster imagery.
- Uploading user-provided SVG is risky — embedded scripts are an XSS vector.
- Complex SVGs with thousands of paths render more slowly than a PNG equivalent.

Approximate file sizes for common scenarios.
AI
- Logo with one art board 200 KB - 2 MB
- Full brand identity kit (multi art boards) 10-50 MB
- Complex illustration with embedded photos 100-500 MB
SVG
- Simple icon 200 B – 2 KB
- Company logo 2–10 KB
- Complex illustration 20–100 KB
- Data-visualization chart 50–500 KB
Quality & Compatibility
Converting keeps resolution, aspect ratio and colour profile identical to the source. Metadata (EXIF, XMP) transfers where SVG supports it; otherwise it is dropped. If the AI contained an alpha channel and SVG does not support transparency, the background is flattened to white by default.
Tips for Best Results
- When uploading to Retina / high-DPI contexts, render the SVG at 2× the CSS pixel size; the crispness gap over 1× is noticeable on modern screens.
- Strip EXIF metadata from the SVG before publishing if the AI came from a phone camera — it often contains GPS coordinates and device IDs.
- If the AI is a screenshot of text or UI, prefer a lossless SVG target to avoid the JPEG-style ringing around glyph edges.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the codecs involved. If both AI and SVG are lossy, the pixels are re-encoded and a small amount of detail is discarded — invisible at default quality settings on photographs. If SVG is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) the output keeps every pixel of the decoded AI exactly, but cannot recover detail that AI had already compressed away.
Often yes, especially when SVG is lossless. AI tuned for efficient web delivery will usually produce smaller files than SVG's default settings. If file size matters, drop the quality in Advanced or pick a more compressed target format instead.
KaijuConverter uploads over HTTPS, processes the image in an isolated container and deletes both the source and the output within two hours. No account is required, file contents are never logged, and we do not use uploads to train any model. For confidential material, the paid plan includes a data-processing agreement.
